Chapter 8 – THE APPOINTMENT SHE NEVER UNDERSTOOD
"Derek took me there."
Rachel's voice trembled.
Ethan stopped walking.
"Where?"
"The building. The one in the photograph."
She closed her eyes.
Eight months earlier, Derek had told her they were visiting a private specialist who offered prenatal consultations.
He claimed the physician was helping him arrange better health coverage for their baby.
Rachel had been seven months pregnant.
She was tired.
Her ankles were swollen.
And Derek had insisted the appointment was important.
They entered through a private parking garage.
A woman wearing a medical badge met them at an elevator.
Rachel remembered holding a small knitted blanket she'd brought for the baby.
She had been asked to sit in a waiting room while Derek spoke to someone in an adjoining office.
Then she heard shouting.
A man's voice.
"You can't keep me here!"
Rachel opened her eyes.
Ethan was staring at her.
"What did you hear?"
She swallowed.
"I thought it was an argument between employees."
"Did you see the man?"
"No. Derek came back and told me the appointment was canceled."
She looked at the photograph again.
"Then we left."
Olivia took notes.
"Did you receive any medical records from that visit?"
"No."
"Did Derek ever explain who the specialist was?"
Rachel shook her head.
"He said the clinic had changed its schedule."
Ethan looked toward the windows.
For months, he had believed his brother was being held somewhere far away.
Now a witness was describing a location in his own company's building.
Rachel covered her mouth.
"I was there."
Ethan looked at her.
"You didn't know."
"I heard him shouting."
"You didn't know it was Daniel."
She began crying.
Derek had brought her into the building deliberately.
He had controlled where she walked, who she saw, and when she left.
Rachel wondered whether he'd used her pregnancy as an excuse to move through the property without attracting attention.
Then she remembered something else.
The woman with the medical badge had handed Derek a folder.
It was brown.
The same color as the envelope Rachel had taken from his apartment.
Rachel hurried to the diaper bag.
She removed the envelope and examined it.
A tiny blue label was attached to the back.
It contained a number.
Ethan went still.
"That's the office number."
Olivia leaned forward.
"Rachel, did Derek ever ask you to sign documents after that appointment?"
She nodded slowly.
"He told me they were for Sophie's medical insurance."
"Do you have copies?"
"No."
Rachel felt her stomach tighten.
She had signed several forms while Derek stood beside her.
He hadn't allowed her time to read them.
She had been afraid to argue.
Now she wondered what she'd actually signed.
Olivia called the family-law attorney to discuss the documents and the possible misuse of Rachel's identity.
Ethan turned toward Rachel.
"You've done enough for today."
She shook her head.
"No."
"You're exhausted."
"I know."
She looked down at Sophie.
"But Derek used me. Maybe he even used my pregnancy to help keep your brother hidden."
Ethan's expression softened.
"That isn't your responsibility."
Rachel looked directly at him.
"Finding out what he did is."
Then Olivia's phone rang.
The detective had obtained a court-authorized search of the twenty-third-floor office.
Investigators had discovered medical equipment, locked storage rooms, and records showing that Daniel had been kept there for several weeks.
But Daniel was no longer in the building.
