Chapter 15 – THE RECORDS THEY COULDN'T DESTROY

"The originals are in the warehouse archive."

Daniel Callahan's voice sounded tired but steady.

He was speaking with detectives from his hospital room.

Ethan sat beside Rachel while Olivia relayed the update.

Daniel had remembered the location of the original financial records.

Marcus kept them in a secure storage area inside a Callahan-owned warehouse.

The building was scheduled to be cleared for renovation the following week.

Investigators obtained the necessary authorization to search the property.

By the following afternoon, they had recovered boxes of contracts, banking records, and corporate correspondence.

The documents connected Marcus to the proposed sale and to the accounts controlled by Derek.

They also contained correspondence describing the pressure placed on Daniel to approve the transfer.

Rachel listened as Olivia explained the discovery.

Then she asked, "Does that mean Derek can't take Sophie's money?"

Olivia nodded.

"The disputed account remains restricted. The investigators will trace the funds and determine their lawful ownership."

Rachel looked down at her daughter.

Sophie was sitting in her lap, playing with the bow on her pink onesie.

She had no idea that adults were arguing over millions of dollars using her name.

Rachel gently kissed her head.

"You're not anybody's bank account, sweetheart."

Ethan looked at her.

Then he smiled.

Later that evening, Daniel called Ethan directly.

Rachel offered to leave them alone.

But Ethan shook his head.

"Stay, if you want."

She sat quietly while the brothers spoke.

Daniel described the months he'd spent confined.

Marcus had repeatedly claimed Ethan was responsible for the financial investigation that destroyed their family business.

He told Daniel that Ethan had abandoned him.

He showed Daniel selected business records suggesting his brother had agreed to the disputed sale.

Daniel had refused to believe it.

But after months without contact, he had begun to wonder.

Ethan's voice broke.

"I never stopped looking for you."

"I know that now."

For a moment, neither brother spoke.

Then Daniel asked about Rachel.

Ethan glanced toward her.

"She's here."

Daniel's voice softened.

"Rachel, I remember hearing you in the office that day."

She swallowed.

"I'm sorry I didn't know you were there."

"You were pregnant. You had no reason to suspect what was happening."

Rachel wiped her eyes.

"Are you going to be okay?"

"I'm getting there."

She smiled through her tears.

Then Daniel said something unexpected.

"Derek used to talk about you."

Rachel's smile disappeared.

"What did he say?"

"He said you were easy to control because you didn't have anyone powerful behind you."

Rachel went completely still.

Ethan's jaw tightened.

Daniel continued.

"He told Marcus that once Sophie was born, he could use the family account to make you sign whatever he needed."

Rachel looked down at her daughter.

There it was.

The truth she had been afraid to hear.

Derek hadn't become controlling after Sophie's birth.

He had planned to exploit her dependence from the beginning.

Rachel closed her eyes.

She remembered every apology.

Every promise.

Every time he'd told her he loved her while quietly taking away another piece of her independence.

Then Ethan's phone rang.

The detective had news.

Marcus Bell had been located.

He was in custody.

But Derek was still missing.

And his final message to Rachel contained something he had never threatened before.
