Chapter 4 – The House of Cards
By 2:00 p.m., the cathedral of St. Jude was completely cleared of guests, leaving behind only scattered white flower petals, empty pews, and three dozen federal investigators documenting evidence.
Outside, the street was a wall of flashing red and blue lights. Over twenty news vans had set up satellite dishes along Fifth Avenue, broadcasting live coverage of the collapse of the Hale Meridian financial empire to millions of viewers worldwide.
BREAKING NEWS: HALE MERIDIAN ASSETS FROZEN IN MASSIVE FEDERAL RACKETEERING BUST; HEIR ARRESTED AT ALTAR.
Inside the church’s private vestry, Elena sat wrapped in a warm wool coat that Daniel had brought from the car. The independent forensic medical examiner sent by the District Attorney’s office had just finished documenting her physical injuries, taking official high-resolution photographs that would be used as primary evidence in the upcoming criminal trial.
Agent Marcus Vance walked into the room carrying three steaming paper cups of coffee. He handed one to me and one to Daniel.
"The federal judge just signed the pre-trial detention order without bail," Marcus told us, leaning against the wooden table. "Because of the witness intimidation charges and the massive flight risk, neither Victor nor Richard will be stepping foot outside of a federal detention facility before their trial."
"What about their legal team?" I asked, taking a small sip of the hot coffee. "Richard Hale has a retainer with three of the largest defense firms in New York."
Marcus smiled—a sharp, grim smile. "He had a retainer. Since all Hale Meridian operating accounts, personal trust accounts, and property deeds have been seized under the emergency forfeiture order, no law firm in the country can accept their retainer without violating federal asset-freezing laws. They're being assigned public defenders."
Elena let out a long, quiet breath, her hands wrapped around her coffee cup, resting her head against my shoulder. "It’s really over?"
"It’s just beginning for them, sweetie," Daniel said gently, pulling up a news feed on his phone. "Hale Meridian stock dropped ninety-four percent in forty-five minutes. Their board of directors just held an emergency vote to strip Richard of his chairman title, and three foreign banking partners have already filed civil recovery suits against their remaining estate."
I looked down at my daughter, smoothing her dark curls.
For months, Victor Hale had forced her to live in a gilded cage of psychological terror, convincing her that his family was an unstoppable force that owned the law, the courts, and the truth itself. He had counted on her silence because he believed that wealth rendered a man untouchable.
He had forgotten that power built on cruelty is nothing more than a house of cards waiting for the right wind to blow.

"What do we do now, Mom?" Elena asked softly, looking up at me with clear, untroubled eyes for the first time in a year.
"Now," I smiled, wrapping my arm tightly around her shoulders, "we go home, we order pizza, and we plan your life—the life where nobody ever tells you who you are allowed to be."
