Chapter 3: The Name on the Screen
Alejandro’s grip tightened around Emma’s wrist.
“Lock…
the doors,” he whispered.
One guard obeyed.
The other reached behind the books and removed a tiny memory card.
Then Elena rushed into the study.
“Emma!”
She pulled her daughter away from Alejandro and stared at the empty injector.
“You used your last one?”
“He couldn’t breathe, Mama.”
Elena’s face crumpled.
“What if you need it tonight?”
Alejandro struggled to sit up.
“Your daughter saved me.”
Before Elena could answer, the guard inserted the memory card into a laptop.
“The camera recorded everything.”
Everyone gathered around the screen.
The footage showed Alejandro entering alone.
Minutes later, someone opened the study door, crossed to his desk, and poured something into his wine.
“Show the face,” Alejandro ordered.
“I can’t,” the guard said.
“Seven minutes were erased.”
“Who had access?”
The guard checked the security log.
His expression changed.
Elena held Emma closer.
“What is it?”
“The recording was deleted using a staff code.”
“Whose code?” Alejandro demanded.
The guard slowly turned the laptop toward him.
Elena’s name was on the screen.
Emma looked up at her mother.
“Mama?”
Elena went pale.
“That’s impossible,” she whispered.
“I didn’t erase anything.”
Then a phone began ringing inside her apron—the same phone Elena had insisted she did not own.
