Chapter 9: The Last Door Closed Gently

Isabella backed against the boardroom table.

“You promised me immunity,” she said to Luca.

“I promised to tell the truth.”

“You poured it into the glass.”

“On your instructions.”

The lead investigator placed the recovered server on the table.

“We found this in Mr.

Vieri’s car.

It contains the original footage, copied staff codes, forged bank documents, and messages arranging the wine tampering.”

Isabella turned to Alejandro.

“You cannot let them take me.

I am your sister.”

“You used my sister’s place at this table to destroy my family.”

“Family?” She pointed at Elena.

“She hid your child for four years.”

Elena stepped forward.

“Because you threatened to take Emma before she was born.”

“You have no proof of that.”

Alejandro held up the old letter.

“Your fingerprints are on every envelope you kept from her.”

The investigator opened a clear evidence bag containing Isabella’s silver bracelet.

A reddish stain remained beside the empty diamond setting.

“The missing stone was recovered from the study rug,” he said.

“It places you beside the wine before Alejandro entered.”

Isabella’s shoulders dropped, but her voice stayed sharp.

“You’ll regret choosing them.

When the attention fades, Elena will leave again.”

Alejandro stood beside Elena.

“She will choose her own future.

You will never choose it for her again.”

The investigator named the consequences one by one.

“Isabella Moretti, you are being detained for conspiracy, evidence destruction, forgery, and deliberately causing a life-threatening medical emergency.”

A second investigator faced Luca.

“Luca Vieri, you are being detained for conspiracy, evidence tampering, unlawful access, and attempting to frame Elena Carter.”

Luca looked at Gabriel.

“You think they’ll reward you?

You’re still only a guard.”

Gabriel opened the door.

“Last night, a four-year-old reminded me that doing the right thing is the reward.”

Isabella stopped beside Emma.

“You took everything from me.”

Emma hugged her rabbit.

“No.

You threw it away.”

Isabella had no answer.

The doors closed behind her and Luca.

Three days later, Elena stood with Alejandro at the courthouse while the prosecutor placed two documents before them.

“The judge denied Isabella’s request for release,” she said.

“Luca’s cooperation does not erase his charges.

Both are prohibited from contacting Elena or Emma.”

Elena signed the protective order.

“Will they be able to come near the mansion?”

“No,” the prosecutor said.

“And the Moretti board has provided every financial record connected to the forged account.”

Arthur Bell waited outside the courtroom.

He handed Elena an envelope.

“This is not charity,” he said.

“It is an offer to lead the foundation’s new financial oversight office.”

Elena did not take it immediately.

“Because I’m Emma’s mother?”

“Because you recognized a false banking record in less than ten seconds.”

Alejandro smiled.

“I told him you would ask that.”

Elena accepted the envelope.

“Then I’ll read the terms.”

“Good,” Arthur said.

“You should argue over at least two of them.”

That evening, Elena carried a small suitcase up from the basement.

Alejandro reached for it, but she kept hold of the handle.

“I am not moving into your room.”

“I didn’t ask you to.”

“You were about to.”

“I was going to offer you the east guest suite.”

“With a lock?”

“With three locks, if you want them.”

“And Emma?”

A small voice called from the landing.

“I picked the room next to both of you.”

Emma stood between two open doors.

Gabriel had placed a new medical kit on the table beside her bed.

“One injector here,” he said.

“One in her backpack, and one downstairs.”

Emma held up her rabbit.

“He doesn’t need one.”

“No,” Gabriel said.

“But he should know where they are.”

After he left, Alejandro sat on the floor beside Emma.

She opened her picture book but did not turn the page.

“Are you really my daddy?”

“The test says I am.”

“Were you my daddy before the test?”

His eyes filled.

“Yes.

I just didn’t know where you were.”

Emma leaned against him.

“Will you go away?”

“No.”

She looked at Elena.

“Will Mama?”

Elena sat on Emma’s other side.

“I’m not promising that every day will be easy.”

Alejandro reached across the book and held out his hand.

“Neither am I.”

Elena looked at it for a long moment.

“The truth is, I still love you,” she said.

“But love without trust frightened me once.”

“Then we build trust before we build anything else.”

She placed her hand in his.

Emma wrapped both arms around them and began to cry.

Elena held her close, and Alejandro rested his forehead against his daughter’s hair.

“I broke the rule,” Emma whispered.

Elena kissed her cheek.

“Yes, you did.”

“Am I in trouble?”

Alejandro opened the bedroom door wider.

“No, sweetheart.

You broke the rule that kept us apart.”

Emma took one hand from each of them and led them through the doorway, and this time, no one told her to stay downstairs.
