Chapter 3 – The Audit of Blood and Greed
By 4:00 AM, Dayton Children's Hospital room 412 was filled with a soft, warm glow.
I sat on the edge of the hospital bed, holding Lily tightly against my chest. Her broken wrist was wrapped in a neat pink cast, her dirty face washed clean, and her bare feet bandage-wrapped and warm under the blankets. In the rolling crib beside us, baby Maddie was sleeping peacefully, sucking softly on her pacifier.
Daniel Whitmore stood near the window, quietly speaking on a encrypted line to his personal legal team and corporate forensic accountants.
"I want every asset connected to BrightPath frozen by 8:00 AM," Daniel commanded into his phone, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp tone. "I want subpoena orders served on Victor Vance’s private residence, his offshore accounts, and every board member who signed off on those logistics disclosures. If a single dollar leaves that charity, I will hold the bank personally liable."
He hung up, took a deep breath, and turned to face me.
"I am so sorry, Mrs. Mercer," Daniel said, walking over and sitting in the chair beside my bed. "My foundation funded that organization for five years. I trusted Victor Vance. I put my wife’s name on their donor plaques. And while I was sitting at black-tie galas giving speeches, they were using my money to lock you in a dark basement and drive your children onto a freezing highway."
"Mr. Whitmore," I said, reaching out to touch his arm, my eyes filled with emotional gratitude. "You saved my daughters. If you hadn't pulled over on that highway… if you hadn't stayed with Lily… I wouldn't have my family tonight."
"It was Lily who saved the day," Daniel smiled softly, looking at my sleeping daughter. "She walked nearly two miles on a broken wrist in the freezing rain to protect her sister."
The hospital room door clicked open. Detective Angela Brooks stepped inside, carrying a thick yellow manila folder.
"We just picked up Marcus Thorne at the airport," Detective Brooks reported, stepping closer to the bed. "He was trying to board a private charter flight to the Bahamas with two duffel bags containing six hundred thousand dollars in cash."
"What about Victor Vance?" Daniel asked, his eyes narrowing.
"Vance is barricaded inside his luxury estate in Oakwood," Brooks replied grimly. "His lawyers are claiming executive immunity, asserting that the financial discrepancies were administrative errors and that Clara Mercer was an unhinged employee who locked herself in the basement to stage a corporate shakedown."
"He said what?" I gasped, my blood running cold.
"He's trying to flip the narrative," Brooks explained. "Vance is a powerful man with deep political connections in the county. His defense team is already releasing a statement to local news outlets accusing Clara of corporate embezzlement and child endangerment for leaving her kids unattended in the warehouse."
"They're trying to ruin me…" I whispered, clutching Lily closer as tears of panic filled my eyes. "They're going to take my children away…"
"Over my dead body," Daniel Whitmore stood up, his tall frame radiating an terrifying, unshakeable aura of power and authority.

He turned to Detective Brooks.
"Tell Vance's high-priced lawyers that Daniel Whitmore is stepping in as Clara Mercer's personal legal guarantor," Daniel said calmly. "Tell them I have just hired the top three forensic accounting firms in the United States to conduct a line-by-line audit of BrightPath’s entire ten-year history. And tell Victor Vance that by noon tomorrow, I will own the building his estate sits on."
