Chapter 5 – The War for the Boardroom

Three months later.

The winter storm outside the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Manhattan Financial Center raged, coating the skyscrapers in ice.

Inside the grand auditorium on the 60th floor, the emergency shareholder meeting of Lockwood Financial had reached a boiling point.

Over three hundred shareholders, institutional investors, and press representatives filled the plush leather seats.

At the center of the executive stage sat Eleanor Lockwood, dressed in an immaculate cream Chanel suit, looking regal, composed, and dangerous. Beside her sat the board of directors, looking nervous as the stock price ticker on the giant screens displayed a fifteen percent drop over the last ninety days.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Eleanor’s voice echoed through the microphone, smooth and persuasive. “The recent volatility in our stock is a temporary reaction to organizational restructuring. My son, Silas, has chosen to take a personal leave of absence. However, the firm’s core operations remain completely secure under my leadership.”

Before she could finish her sentence, the heavy double doors at the back of the auditorium slammed open.

The hum of chatter instantly died.

Walking down the center aisle, flanked by four legal advisors, was Silas Lockwood.

I was wearing a charcoal three-piece suit, looking healthier, stronger, and more lethal than I had in five years.

And walking right beside me, holding her head high in a breathtaking navy silk dress, was Carolina. In her arms, wearing a tiny black cardigan, was three-month-old Gabriel.

Gasps exploded across the room. Flashbulbs began flashing rapidly as reporters recognized the disgraced ex-wife and the secret child that had been the subject of Wall Street rumors for weeks.

Eleanor’s face turned white as chalk. Her grip on the podium tightened until her knuckles turned blue.

“Silas,” Eleanor said into the microphone, her voice straining to maintain control. “This is a private shareholder meeting. You have no standing here.”

“I have thirty-four percent of the voting shares, Mother,” I called out, my voice ringing across the auditorium without needing a microphone. “And as of nine o’clock this morning, the Takahashi Group has signed a binding agreement to transfer their twelve percent voting block directly to my proxy.”

The room erupted into chaos.

Thirty-four plus twelve. Forty-six percent.

I walked up the stage steps, stopping ten feet from my mother. Carolina stood right beside me, holding Gabriel firmly against her chest, looking Eleanor directly in the eye without a trace of fear.

I pulled a leather folder from my advisor’s hands and laid it on the main podium.

“Resolution 402,” I announced to the entire auditorium. “A motion to remove Eleanor Lockwood as Chairman of the Board for gross breach of fiduciary duty, fraud, and misrepresentation of corporate assets.”

“You can’t do this!” Eleanor hissed, leaning forward, her voice dropping so only the stage could hear her. “You will ruin this family name!”

“You ruined this family the day you tried to erase my son,” Carolina spoke up, her voice clear, strong, and resounding across the stage.

Eleanor turned her glare toward Carolina, but for the first time in her life, her intimidating presence failed. Carolina didn't back down an inch.

“Look at him, Eleanor,” Carolina said softly, gesturing to the baby in her arms, whose bright gray eyes were staring up at the lights. “Look at your grandson. The child you tried to pay to have erased.”

Reporters in the front rows gasped, their cameras zooming in on Gabriel’s face. The resemblance between the baby, myself, and the historical portraits of the Lockwood family hanging in the lobby was undeniable.

The board members looked at each other in panic. They knew that if this scandal went to trial, the firm’s reputation would be completely destroyed.

The lead director, an elderly billionaire named Richard Sterling, stood up from his seat.

“Eleanor,” Richard said quietly, his voice heavy with disappointment. “Resign. Now. Before the board votes publicly.”

Eleanor looked around the stage. She looked at the directors who had served her for decades, now turning their eyes away. She looked at the shareholders shaking their heads.

And finally, she looked at me.

“Silas…” she whispered, her voice breaking, exposing the frail, desperate woman beneath the cold exterior. “I did everything for you.”

“No, Mother,” I said gently, taking the microphone from her hand. “You did everything for control. And your time is up.”
