Chapter 4 – The Shattered Mirror

Adrian froze.

The air inside the grand boardroom suddenly felt ice-cold, thick, and impossible to breathe.

For five full seconds, he didn't move. He simply stared at the black folder resting on the mahogany wood as if it were an explosive device that had been quietly armed right in front of his chest.

"What is this, Nora?" Adrian asked. His voice was no longer that of the corporate chairman or the confident husband. It was a strained, hollow whisper. "Is this a joke?"

"I don't make jokes about legal filings, Adrian. You know that better than anyone," I replied, standing tall, my hands folded neatly in front of my ivory jacket.

Adrian took a step toward me, his brow furrowing in deep distress. "Nora, if this is about the stress from the Baltimore deal, or the pressure from the board—"

"At two-seventeen this morning," I interrupted, my voice completely devoid of emotion, "I walked into our bedroom in the penthouse."

Adrian stopped dead in his tracks. All the color drained from his sharp, handsome face.

"I had just landed at JFK after seventy hours without sleep," I continued, looking directly into his wide, horrified eyes. "I came home to share a glass of wine with my husband because he texted me six hours earlier saying he missed his wife. Instead, I found chief of staff Sloane Bennett wearing my silk robe, asleep against your bare chest."

"Nora…" Adrian choked out, taking a frantic step forward, his hands reaching out toward me in utter desperation. "Nora, wait… listen to me—"

"Do not touch me," I said, my voice so sharp and lethal it froze him in his tracks.

Tears sprang into Adrian’s eyes—real, desperate tears that I had only seen twice in fifteen years of marriage.

"Nora, please," Adrian pleaded, his voice cracking with a raw, terrifying panic. "It isn't what you think… I was drugged, I was—"

"Save it for your crisis management team, Adrian," I spat, the anger finally breaking through my frozen exterior like lava through ice. "I didn't just stand there and watch my husband lie with his mistress. I looked at the nightstand beside your bed. I saw the blue folder. I saw my forged signature on the Harbor Nine transfer deed."

Adrian gasped, his eyes widening in complete, unadulterated shock. "The Harbor Nine transfer… was on my nightstand?"

"Don't play stupid with me!" I yelled, my voice ringing out across the empty boardroom. "Sloane Bennett was in our bed, and the forged document that framed me for federal corporate fraud was sitting right beside her earrings! You used me! You let me build your clean corporate empire, and the moment you needed to move dirty assets through Harbor Nine, you forged my name so I would take the fall if the feds came knocking!"

"No! NO, NORA!" Adrian roared, slamming his heavy fist against the mahogany table so hard the water glasses rattled! "I WOULD NEVER FRAME YOU! I WOULD DIE BEFORE I LET ANYONE HURT YOU!"

"You already hurt me!" I wept, tears finally spilling down my cheeks. "You destroyed fifteen years of trust in three seconds! You turned our home into a crime scene!"

Adrian collapsed into the chair beside him, burying his face in his hands, his broad shoulders shaking violently as a ragged sob escaped his throat.

"I didn't do it, Nora…" Adrian wept into his hands, looking up at me with red, ruined eyes. "I swear on my father's grave… I swear on my life… I did not forge that document. I didn't even know Sloane was in the apartment until I woke up this morning at six o'clock alone in that bed."

I stared at him, my heart hammering against my ribs.

He looked entirely shattered—not like a man who had been caught in a master plan, but like a man who had stepped into a trap he didn't even realize was laid for him.

"You're lying," I whispered, though a cold, terrifying doubt suddenly flickered in the back of my mind.

"I'm not lying!" Adrian stood up, grabbing the edges of the table, his eyes desperate, searching mine. "Look at me, Nora! Look at your husband! I am a ruthless man, I have done dark things to protect our family name, but I have NEVER lied to you! Someone set us both up! Someone put Sloane in that bed and placed that folder on that nightstand knowing you were coming home from Baltimore!"

Before I could answer, the boardroom doors flew open.

Marcus Bell, the night security supervisor from our residential building, rushed into the room, his face pale, holding a secure satellite phone.

"Mr. Vale! Mrs. Vale!" Marcus panted, his breath ragged. "We have a massive security breach on sub-level two! Two unknown vehicles just breached the basement garage! They've taken Sloane Bennett!"
