Chapter 5 – The Shadow of the Family

The world shifted on its axis in less than ten seconds.

Adrian’s despair vanished instantly, replaced by the lethal, hyper-focused instinct of a mafia don whose territory had just been invaded.

He pulled a small, concealed silver radio from his inner jacket pocket and pressed the primary button. "Dominic! Lock down the building! Code Red! Seal all subterranean exits and hold the elevator banks!"

"Understood, Boss!" a rough voice static-charged over the speaker.

Adrian turned to me, his hands reaching out, firmly grasping my shoulders. "Nora, you stay in this room. Lock the doors from the inside. Do not open them for anyone except me or Dominic."

"Adrian, what is happening?!" I demanded, my heart pounding against my chest.

"Someone is executing a hostile takeover of Vale Meridian from the inside," Adrian said, his dark eyes burning with absolute determination. "And they used my chief of staff and your legal signature to trigger a war between us."

He didn't wait for my response. He pulled a black 9mm pistol from a shoulder holster hidden beneath his charcoal jacket and sprinted out of the boardroom, flanked by Marcus and three armed security officers.

I stood alone in the grand boardroom, listening to the alarm sirens beginning to wail through the skyscraper's ventilation shafts.

A hostile takeover.

A war between us.

My mind, trained by fifteen years of complex corporate intelligence, began connecting the dots with terrifying speed.

Sloane Bennett hadn't acted alone. She was a chief of staff earning three hundred thousand dollars a year; she didn't have the international connections required to set up an offshore shell company like Apex Maritime Logistics. And she certainly didn't have the tactical capability to breach a high-security residential penthouse or launch an armed extraction from sub-level two.

Someone powerful—someone inside the Vale family circle—was backing her.

I walked over to the executive terminal at the end of the room, inserted my master legal keycard, and bypassed the security protocols Margaret Shaw had locked down earlier.

I pulled up the ownership registration for Apex Maritime Logistics—the offshore shell company that had tried to steal Harbor Nine.

Layer by layer, I stripped away the dummy corporations registered in Panama and the Cayman Islands. It took three minutes of intense decryption using my private legal codes.

When the final beneficial owner’s name appeared on the screen, my blood ran cold.

Julian Vale.

Adrian’s uncle. The last remaining elder of the old-school Vale syndicate—a man who had fiercely opposed Adrian’s transition into legitimate corporate finance ten years ago, a man who believed the Vale family belonged in the shadows of organized crime.

Julian didn't just want Harbor Nine. Harbor Nine was the primary port where federal law enforcement inspected incoming cargo. By transferring Harbor Nine to Apex Maritime, Julian intended to re-open the dirty smuggling routes his father had used thirty years ago—destroying fifteen years of my legal compliance work in a single day.

And to ensure Adrian wouldn't stop him, Julian had used Sloane to poison our marriage, frame me for fraud, and force me to resign as Chief Legal Officer. Without me holding up the legal walls of Vale Meridian, Adrian would have been crushed by federal indictments within a week.

A loud gun-blast echoed from the elevator lobby down the hall!

BANG! BANG!

Shouts and shattered glass filled the corridor.

I didn't lock the door. I grabbed my briefcase, pulled my backup flash drive containing the master corporate keycodes from my pocket, and walked out into the hallway.
