Chapter 6 – THE BROTHER WHO NEVER CAME HOME
"Put my brother on the phone."
Ethan's voice had become dangerously quiet.
Rachel stood near the fireplace, clutching the envelope.
The caller laughed.
"Still giving orders, Callahan?"
"Let me hear Daniel's voice."
A long silence followed.
Then another man spoke.
"Ethan?"
Ethan closed his eyes.
"Daniel. Are you hurt?"
"I'm alive."
Rachel watched the color drain from Ethan's face.
Eight months of unanswered questions had been reduced to two words.
I'm alive.
Daniel continued.
"Don't give them anything until you've spoken to the police."
The caller interrupted.
"That's enough."
The line disconnected.
Ethan remained motionless.
Rachel placed the envelope on the coffee table.
"I'm sorry."
He looked up.
"For what?"
"I brought this into your house. I didn't know—"
"You didn't cause my brother's disappearance."
Rachel stared at him.
Derek had spent months making her believe every bad thing that happened around her was somehow her fault.
Ethan's answer felt unfamiliar.
And strangely comforting.
He picked up his phone and called his attorney.
"Daniel is alive. I heard his voice. Contact the detective handling his disappearance and preserve this call."
Rachel sat down.
"What happened eight months ago?"
Ethan looked toward the dark windows.
Daniel Callahan had worked in the family's commercial real-estate business.
Unlike Ethan, he preferred spreadsheets to confrontation.
He managed building acquisitions and reviewed financial transactions.
Eight months earlier, Daniel discovered irregular payments connected to Marcus Bell.
He told Ethan he was arranging an independent audit.
Then he disappeared.
His car was found abandoned near a warehouse.
His phone was recovered beside it.
Police investigated, but no confirmed lead established where he had gone.
Ethan had spent months searching.
His enemies claimed Daniel fled with stolen money.
Several business associates encouraged Ethan to believe his brother had betrayed him.
Eventually, Ethan began dismantling the business relationships he no longer trusted.
The flight Rachel boarded was supposed to take him to a meeting with an attorney about permanently withdrawing from those operations.
Rachel looked down at the envelope.
"And Derek was involved?"
"I don't know how much he knew."
"Then why did he threaten me?"
Ethan studied the documents.
"Because whatever these records show, someone is frightened of losing them."
Rachel's phone vibrated.
Another message from Derek.
"Come back to Chicago with Sophie. We can fix this."
She stared at it.
Then typed a reply.
"Don't contact me again except through an attorney."
She blocked his number.
Ethan watched quietly.
Rachel looked up.
"I'm not going back to him."
"You don't have to."
She swallowed.
"But I need to protect Sophie."
"Then let's find a lawyer who can help you do that."
The following morning, Ethan's attorney, Olivia Grant, arrived at the lake house.
She brought news.
The photograph had been taken outside a Callahan-owned office building two days after Daniel disappeared.
Rachel stared at the date.
"Two days afterward?"
Olivia nodded.
"Which means someone photographed Daniel while his family believed he was missing."
Ethan looked toward the window.
And Rachel realized the envelope hadn't merely connected Derek to a financial crime.
