Chapter 5 – THE HOUSE BY THE LAKE
"Mommy, we're home."
Rachel looked down at Sophie sleeping in her arms.
Her little girl had no idea where they were.
The black SUV had just arrived at a quiet house overlooking Lake Michigan.
It was smaller than Rachel expected.
No enormous gates.
No marble statues.
Just a stone driveway, a wide porch, and warm lights glowing through the windows.
Ethan stepped out first.
He opened Rachel's door.
"There's a guest room upstairs. You'll have privacy."
Rachel looked around.
"Who lives here?"
"I do when I need somewhere quiet."
She hesitated.
"Does Derek know about this place?"
"No."
Ethan carried her suitcase inside while Rachel brought Sophie.
The living room smelled faintly of cedarwood.
A fire burned in the fireplace.
There were no photographs on the walls.
No personal belongings except a stack of books beside the sofa.
Rachel wondered what kind of man could own a home that looked so comfortable and still make it feel as though nobody lived there.
Ethan showed her the guest room.
"There's a crib in the storage room. I'll have it brought up."
Rachel looked at him.
"You have a crib?"
He paused.
"It belonged to my niece."
The answer was unexpectedly gentle.
Rachel thanked him.
Then she closed the door.
For the first time in nearly two days, she was alone with Sophie in a room where nobody was shouting.
She changed her daughter's diaper.
Fed her.
Placed her carefully in the crib after Ethan's housekeeper brought it upstairs.
Then Rachel sat on the edge of the bed.
And began crying.
Quietly.
So Sophie wouldn't wake.
She had spent months pretending everything was manageable.
Pretending Derek's angry outbursts were stress.
Pretending his control over their money was normal.
Pretending she wasn't afraid to ask him for enough money to buy diapers.
Now she was in a stranger's house, holding financial documents she didn't understand.
And her mother was still in Chicago.
Rachel wiped her face.
Her phone vibrated.
Derek.
She stared at his name.
Then a message appeared.
"You have no idea who you're sitting beside."
A second message followed.
"Ask Callahan what happened to his brother."
Rachel's stomach tightened.
She looked toward the bedroom door.
Ethan had never mentioned a brother.
She opened the envelope again.
The photograph of Derek and Marcus Bell had been taken outside a building in downtown Chicago.
Rachel studied the image.
Behind the two men stood a third person.
She hadn't noticed him before.
He was partly hidden by the glass entrance.
But his face was visible.
He looked remarkably like Ethan.
Rachel took the photograph downstairs.
Ethan was sitting in the living room, speaking quietly on the phone.
When he saw her, he ended the call.
"Is Sophie alright?"
"She's sleeping."
Rachel handed him the photograph.
"Who is this?"
Ethan looked at the man behind Derek.
His face changed.
For a moment, he seemed unable to breathe.
Then he whispered, "My brother."
Rachel sat down.
"What happened to him?"
Ethan's eyes remained fixed on the photograph.
"He disappeared eight months ago."
Rachel felt cold.
"And Derek knows him?"
Ethan looked up.
"Apparently."
Then his phone rang.
An unknown number.
He answered.
A man's voice spoke.
