Chapter 4 – THE ENVELOPE IN THE DIAPER BAG
"What envelope?"
Ethan watched Rachel sit down in the quiet airport lounge.
She looked at her open diaper bag.
Three days earlier, she'd been packing Sophie's clothes while Derek was at work.
Her hands had been shaking.
She had grabbed every important document she could find.
Birth certificate.
Medical records.
Insurance cards.
A small folder containing her own identification papers.
She had also taken a brown envelope from the kitchen counter.
She thought it contained the lease for their apartment.
Now she wasn't sure.
Rachel unzipped the side compartment.
The envelope was still there.
She placed it on the table.
Ethan didn't touch it.
"Do you know what's inside?"
Rachel shook her head.
She opened it carefully.
A stack of printed bank statements slipped onto the table.
Beneath them was a photograph.
A man in a charcoal suit stood beside Derek outside a Chicago office building.
Rachel recognized Derek immediately.
But the other man was unfamiliar.
Ethan picked up the photograph after Rachel handed it to him.
His expression changed.
"Where did Derek get this?"
"I don't know."
"Did he tell you who he worked for?"
Rachel frowned.
"He said he handled commercial property investments."
Ethan looked at the bank statements.
Several payments had been made to an investment company called Walsh Capital.
The originating accounts belonged to businesses Ethan recognized.
He sat back slowly.
Rachel noticed.
"What is it?"
Ethan looked at her.
"Derek has been doing business with someone I know."
"Who?"
"Marcus Bell."
Rachel shook her head.
The name meant nothing to her.
Ethan continued.
"Marcus used to manage several properties for my family. We ended our relationship after discovering financial irregularities."
Rachel glanced at the photograph.
"Is that him?"
"Yes."
She felt her stomach tighten.
Derek had always described his business as complicated.
He told Rachel not to ask questions.
He claimed her lack of financial knowledge made her incapable of understanding his work.
Now she was beginning to wonder whether the envelope had anything to do with his sudden interest in Sophie.
Ethan examined the dates.
The most recent transfer had occurred two days before Rachel left Chicago.
The amount was enormous.
Nearly two million dollars.
Rachel stared at the figure.
"Derek told me he couldn't afford to help pay for Sophie's doctor."
Her voice broke.
"He made me put diapers on my credit card."
Ethan looked at her.
He didn't offer excuses for Derek.
He simply handed the statements back.
"You should keep these. An independent attorney can help you determine what they mean."
Rachel folded the papers.
She was exhausted.
Frightened.
And increasingly angry.
Then she spotted something written on the back of the photograph.
A date.
An address.
And two words.
"Callahan transfer."
Rachel looked up.
"Ethan?"
He turned.
"What?"
She showed him the writing.
For several seconds, he didn't speak.
Then he looked toward his security guard.
"Call our attorney."
Rachel's pulse quickened.
"What does it mean?"
Ethan stood.
"It means Derek may have been involved in the financial scheme that made me leave Chicago."
Rachel stared at him.
The man who had helped her on the plane was connected to the very people she had been trying to escape.
