Chapter 9 – The Clearing Fog
Three days later, a heavy, serene snow began falling over Manhattan, covering the concrete city in a pristine white blanket.
The news outlets were filled with reports of a massive federal sweep that had dismantled the remaining factions of the Moretti crime family. Agent Marcus Reed had held a televised press conference announcing the seizure of illegal weapons and the arrest of twelve high-ranking cartel lieutenants across New York and New Jersey.
Damian Croft’s name was never mentioned.
In a luxurious private suite on the top floor of the Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan, Lily Quinn sat in a comfortable armchair near the window, sipping warm hot chocolate while a team of world-class physical therapists reviewed her updated recovery chart.
"Her nerve damage is completely reversing," the head surgeon told Harper in the hallway outside the room. "With the new experimental treatment protocol we initiated yesterday, she'll be walking without a cane in less than three months."
Harper let out a long, shuddering breath of relief, leaning back against the wall. "Thank you, Doctor. Thank you so much."
She walked back into the suite, sitting on the arm of Lily's chair and wrapping her arm around her sister's shoulders.
"How are you feeling, Lil?" Harper asked softly.
"I'm good, Harp," Lily smiled, leaning her head against her sister. She looked down at the massive bouquet of fresh white roses sitting on the coffee table—sent personally by Damian that morning. "He really loves you, doesn't he?"
Harper looked at the roses, her heart swelling with an emotion so deep and profound it frightened her. "He saved us, Lily."
"He didn't just save us," Lily corrected gently, looking up into her sister's eyes. "He fought a war for you. I was there, Harper. I saw his face when he came through that door. He would have burned the whole city down if they had hurt you."
Harper kissed her sister's forehead, then stood up and adjusted her coat. "I need to go see him."
Twenty minutes later, Harper arrived at Croft Holdings.
The fifty-second floor was quiet. The chaos of the past three weeks had settled into a smooth, orderly peace. Eleanor Vance offered Harper a warm, respectful smile as she walked past the administrative desks toward Damian’s private office.
Harper didn't knock. She opened the heavy door and stepped inside.
Damian stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out at the snow falling over the East River. He wore a simple, dark cashmere sweater, his dark hair slightly disheveled. The bruise on his jaw was gone, replaced by a clean, sharp jawline.
He turned around as she entered, a soft, beautiful smile transforming his face.
"How is Lily?" Damian asked softly, walking across the room to meet her.
"She's going to walk again, Damian," Harper said, her voice trembling slightly with emotion. "Completely. The doctors said she'll make a full recovery."
Damian let out a soft breath, reaching out to take both of her hands in his. "I know. I spoke with the chief of surgery an hour ago."
Harper looked down at their joined hands, then up into his grey eyes.
"Agent Reed held a press conference today," Harper murmured. "He cleared your terminals of all suspicion."
"Julian provided the FBI with complete financial documentation regarding the Moretti family's illegal logistics operations," Damian explained calmly. "Agent Reed got his career-defining bust, the feds got their headlines, and my shipping lanes are permanently secured."
Harper chuckled softly, shaking her head. "You really do think of everything."
"Not everything," Damian said quietly, his tone dropping into a serious, intense register.
He let go of her hands, reached into his pocket, and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box.
Harper’s breath hitched in her throat. "Damian…"
He opened the box. Inside rested an breathtaking, flawless emerald-cut diamond ring, set in dark platinum, glowing under the office lights.
"A month ago, you walked into my ballroom and slapped me across the face because I was being a cold, arrogant monster," Damian said, his eyes locking onto hers with absolute sincerity. "You brought humanity back into my life, Harper. You showed me that I don't have to be a predator to protect the people I love."
He took her left hand, brushing his thumb across her knuckles.
"I don't want an employee, Harper. I don't want an event coordinator. I want a partner. I want you to stand beside me as my wife."
Harper stared at the ring, then at the man who had brought her out of the dark, who had risked his life, his empire, and his future to keep her sister safe.
"On one condition," Harper whispered, a tear of joy slipping down her cheek.
Damian smiled faintly. "Name it."
"If you ever speak to another server like you spoke to Martha," Harper said, a fierce, loving spark in her eyes, "I will slap you twice as hard."

"Deal," Damian whispered against her lips.
