Chapter 10 – The Queen of the Waterfront
One year later.
The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was bathed in warm, golden light.
Over four hundred guests filled the room—city officials, international shipping barons, foreign diplomats, and the top executives of New York’s largest corporations. The occasion was the annual gala for the Quinn-Croft Foundation for Pediatric Rehabilitation—a non-profit organization established by Harper and Damian that provided full medical grants for injured children across the state.
Standing near the main entrance, dressed in an exquisite black silk evening gown that draped flawlessly over her frame, was Harper Quinn-Croft.
Beside her, looking radiant and healthy, was seventeen-year-old Lily Quinn, walking effortlessly in high heels without a trace of a limp, laughing as she chatted with a group of young medical students funded by the foundation.
And standing right behind Harper, his arm wrapped securely around her waist, was Damian Croft.
He wore a bespoke black tuxedo, his eyes scanning the crowd with cool, relaxed confidence. But whenever his gaze landed on his wife, his face softened into an expression of absolute, unyielding devotion.
"Look at them," Harper whispered, leaning her head back against Damian's shoulder as she watched Lily laugh across the room. "A year ago, I was working fourteen-hour catering shifts just to pay for her physical therapy."
Damian kissed the top of her head, his breath warm against her hair. "And today, you run the largest medical grant endowment in the state."
"We run it," Harper corrected gently, turning in his arms to look up at him.
Before Damian could answer, an elderly woman wearing a crisp banquet server uniform walked up to their table carrying a tray of fresh champagne flutes.
It was Martha.
When Harper had taken over Croft Holdings' hospitality operations, her very first act had been to appoint Martha as the Chief Director of Banquets for all Croft-owned venues, complete with a six-figure salary, full medical benefits, and a guaranteed pension.
"Good evening, Mr. and Mrs. Croft," Martha smiled warmly, setting two flutes of vintage champagne on their table. "Everything in the main dining hall is prepared according to your instructions, ma'am."
"Thank you, Martha," Harper smiled, taking her hand gently. "Please make sure you take a break after the toast."
"Of course, Mrs. Croft," Martha nodded respectfully, offering Damian a warm smile before heading back toward the catering doors.
Damian picked up two champagne flutes, handing one to Harper.
They walked out onto the private balcony overlooking Central Park, the cool night air refreshing against their skin. Below them, the lights of Manhattan stretched out like a galaxy of fallen stars.
"You know," Damian murmured, wrapping his arms around her from behind as they looked out at the city, "Agent Reed came by my office today."
Harper turned her head, eyebrow raised. "What did he want?"
"He wanted to thank you," Damian chuckled softly. "The charity audit you performed on the Port Authority saved them six million dollars in administrative waste. He called you the most dangerous woman in New York."
Harper laughed, a bright, musical sound that carried over the quiet park. She leaned back against his chest, feeling the strong, steady beat of his heart.
"I'm not dangerous, Damian," Harper whispered, turning in his embrace and wrapping her arms around his neck. "I just know how to handle garbage."
