Chapter 6: The Friend Who Chose Fear

We found Elias in his office feeding papers into a shredder.

Grace pulled the plug while I removed the half-cut page from his hand.

“Where is the original recording?” I asked.

Elias looked toward Vanessa.

“You brought her here?”

“She brought me the truth.”

“She brought you stolen files.”

Vanessa held up her phone.

“Say that again.

I’m recording.”

Elias sank into his chair.

“Clara, you don’t understand what Adrian can do.”

“I understand what he did to me.

Tell me what he did to you.”

“He found payments I made for my son.”

“Gambling debts?”

Elias shut his eyes.

“My son owed dangerous people.

Adrian settled the debt, then made the payment look like I had taken money from a client account.”

“So you protected yourself by giving him my father.”

“No.

I delayed one filing.”

“You notarized my forged signature.”

“He said it was temporary.”

“You hid my father’s calls.”

Elias struck the desk.

“He said he would destroy my son!”

The room went still.

I placed the torn page before him.

“And what did your silence nearly destroy?”

His mouth opened, but nothing came out.

Grace pointed at the locked cabinet behind him.

“Open the vault.”

“It’s empty.”

“Open it.”

Elias entered the code.

Inside sat a red envelope, a brass key, and an old silver watch.

Vanessa picked up the envelope.

“It’s addressed to Clara.”

Elias reached for it, but I held it against my chest.

“You don’t touch anything else my father left me.”

The letter contained four lines.

Clara, the recording you hear first may not be the truth.

The complete copy is stored where our company began.

Use the brass key.

Trust the woman I dismissed, and forgive her if you can.

I looked at Grace.

“He meant you.”

Grace pressed her lips together.

“Your father dismissed me publicly so Adrian would stop watching me.”

“Where did the company begin?”

Elias pointed toward the silver watch.

“Your grandfather’s repair shop in Queens.

Thomas kept the building.”

A slow clap sounded from the doorway.

Adrian stood there with Leonard and two private security officers.

“Touching,” Adrian said.

“A traitor, a mistress, and an unstable heiress.”

Vanessa slipped the memory card into her sleeve.

“You forgot the frightened lawyer.”

Adrian looked at Elias.

“I told you to clear the vault.”

“I couldn’t destroy Thomas’s letter.”

“That is why weak men should never be trusted with important work.”

I held up the brass key.

“You are too late.”

“No, Clara.

You are.”

Leonard handed Grace a court order.

“This authorizes the recovery of confidential Vale property.”

Grace read it.

“The order covers company records.

Not personal letters.”

Adrian nodded to the security officers.

“Search them.”

I stepped in front of Vanessa.

“You will not touch her.”

Adrian smiled.

“Still playing protector?

She slept with your fiancé and spent your money.”

“And she is standing beside me now.

Where are your friends?”

His smile disappeared.

“You think a recording will save you?”

“I think you came here because you’re terrified it might.”

He moved closer.

“I offered you comfort, status, and a place beside me.”

“You offered me a cage.”

“I offered you survival.”

I raised my voice so Vanessa’s phone would capture every word.

“You forged my signature, paid Dr.

Hale, and stole from Vale Consolidated.”

Adrian glanced at her sleeve.

“Give me the card.”

“No,” Vanessa said.

One security officer moved toward her.

Elias stepped between them.

“You will leave my office.”

Adrian stared at him.

“After everything I did for your son?”

“You did nothing for him.

You purchased me.”

Elias took his phone from the desk.

“I’m calling the authorities.”

Adrian seized the red envelope, threw it into the shredder, and slammed the switch.

Grace pulled him back while I grabbed the brass key from the floor.

The security officers froze when Elias said the call was being recorded.

Adrian straightened his jacket.

“You have a key to an empty building.

By morning, I’ll own that too.”

He walked out with Leonard behind him.

Vanessa checked her phone.

“The confession is clear.”

Grace held out her hand for the key.

“Then we go to Queens now.”

Elias looked through the window and went pale.

“Clara, Adrian’s car is gone—but Leonard’s men are still downstairs.”

A fire alarm began to ring.

Smoke curled under the office door.
