Chapter 5: The Woman I Least Expected

Vanessa chose a small café across from Grand Central, then arrived wearing a plain coat and no bracelet.

She placed her phone on the table but kept one hand over it.

“You came alone?” she asked.

“Grace is outside.”

“Adrian will have someone watching.”

“Then stop wasting time.”

Vanessa flinched.

“You always were colder than you looked.”

“And you were crueler.”

She looked down at her bare wrist.

“I deserved that.”

“You stood in a hotel corridor and told me to be grateful Adrian would marry me.”

“I wanted you to leave him.”

“You wanted to humiliate me.”

“Yes,” she said.

“Both things can be true.”

She pushed the phone across the table.

The screen showed a payment from a Sterling company to Dr.

Hale’s private consulting firm.

“Two hundred thousand dollars,” I said.

“There is another payment due after the competency order becomes permanent.”

“Why give me this?”

Vanessa unfastened a chain from her neck.

A small memory card hung from it.

“Because Adrian told me the apartment was mine.

This morning, his lawyer sent an eviction notice.”

“That is why you changed sides?”

“No.

This is.”

She opened an audio file.

Adrian’s voice came through the phone.

“Once Clara is declared incompetent, Vanessa becomes unnecessary.

Close her accounts and make sure she understands that silence is the only thing protecting her.”

Vanessa stopped the file.

“He never loved either of us.”

“I already knew he didn’t love me.”

“No, Clara.

You knew he wanted your company.

You didn’t know your father asked Elias to remove Adrian from every Vale contract two weeks before he passed.”

My fingers tightened around the cup.

“What did Elias do?”

“He replaced part of the recording.”

The noise of the café seemed to disappear.

“You’re lying.”

“I heard Adrian congratulate him.”

“Why would Elias betray my father?”

“Adrian covered his son’s gambling debts.

Then he used the payments to control him.”

I stood so quickly the table moved.

“My father called Elias his brother.”

“Sit down.”

“Don’t tell me what to do.”

Vanessa rose too.

“Then listen while standing.

Your father tried to save you, but Elias delayed the documents.

Adrian reached the hospital first.”

My breath caught.

Grace hurried inside and placed both hands around mine.

“Clara, look at me.”

“He knew I was going to marry Adrian.”

“Yes.”

“And he left me with men he couldn’t trust.”

Grace’s eyes filled.

“Your father made terrible mistakes while trying to hide how frightened he was.”

“He should have called me.”

“He did.”

Vanessa turned the phone toward me.

A call log showed eleven calls from my father’s private number on the night he lost consciousness.

My knees struck the chair.

“I never received them.”

“Adrian had your phone,” Vanessa said.

“You were at the charity dinner.

He told everyone you had left it in the car.”

I pressed my hands over my face.

“He stood beside me all night.”

Grace knelt beside my chair.

“Cry if you need to.

But don’t carry his shame as if it belongs to you.”

The first sob escaped before I could stop it.

Grace held me while Vanessa stood awkwardly beside the table.

Then Vanessa took off her coat and laid it over my shoulders.

“I know you have no reason to believe me,” she said.

“But I am sorry.”

I wiped my face.

“Sorry does not erase what you did.”

“No.”

“You accepted gifts bought with my company’s money.”

“Yes.”

“You helped him make me feel small.”

Her chin trembled.

“Yes.”

“If you help expose him, you will still repay every dollar.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I already gave Grace the apartment deed and the account details.”

Grace looked at her.

“You did?”

“I don’t want anything he can use to own me.”

My phone rang.

Adrian’s name appeared.

I answered.

“Where are you?” he asked.

“Why?”

“Because Vanessa has taken property belonging to me.”

Vanessa leaned toward the speaker.

“You mean the evidence?”

Adrian went silent.

Then he laughed softly.

“Clara, check your email.

I sent the full medical petition to every board member and three reporters.

Meet me tonight, sign away your shares, and I may withdraw it.”

“I’m not signing anything.”

“Then your father’s private medical records go out next.

Let us see how long his reputation survives.”

The call ended.

Vanessa stared at the memory card.

“There’s one place he could have found those records.”

Grace’s face changed.

“Elias’s private vault.”

A message appeared from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of Elias entering Adrian’s car twenty minutes earlier.
