Chapter 4: The Vote He Thought He Owned

I entered the Vale boardroom wearing Grace’s navy coat over my wedding gown.

Adrian was already seated at the head of the table, with Elias beside him and a physician I had never met holding a folder marked CONFIDENTIAL.

Adrian tapped the empty chair opposite him.

“Sit down, Clara.”

“That was my father’s chair.”

“And this is my meeting.”

Margaret pushed back from the table.

“Until a vote says otherwise, this company belongs to Clara’s family.”

Adrian smiled at her.

“Sentiment is not governance.”

I set my forged authorization beside his hand.

“Neither is forgery.”

His lawyer, Leonard Price, slid the paper back toward me.

“An allegation is not proof.”

Grace placed my passport on the table.

“Clara entered London two days before that signature was notarized.

Border records confirm she remained there for a week.”

Leonard opened another folder.

“Electronic authorization does not require physical presence.”

“It does when the form says ‘signed before witness,’” I replied.

“And Elias Ward is named as that witness.”

Every face turned toward Elias.

Adrian rested a hand on his shoulder.

“Choose your words carefully.”

Elias swallowed.

“The signature appeared genuine when I received it.”

“You didn’t see me sign it?” I asked.

“No.”

“Then why did you notarize it?”

“I relied on established procedures.”

“My father trusted you for thirty years.”

Adrian struck the table with his palm.

“This meeting concerns Clara’s fitness, not ancient paperwork.”

The physician stood.

“I am Dr.

Martin Hale.

I reviewed medical information supplied by Mr.

Sterling.”

“Have we met?” I asked.

“No.”

“Have you examined me?”

“No, but the records describe severe anxiety, confusion, and irrational suspicion.”

Grace leaned forward.

“Suspicion of missing money is not irrational when twelve million dollars is missing.”

Dr.

Hale opened his folder.

“The petitioner also provided footage of Ms.

Vale screaming and damaging property.”

Adrian pressed a remote.

A screen showed me in his apartment, knocking a glass from a table while he stood outside the camera’s frame.

“You said you had erased that,” I whispered.

He lowered his voice.

“You should never believe a promise made during an argument.”

The recording ended before his hand seized my arm.

It ended before the glass broke beneath us.

Margaret looked at me.

“Clara, is there more to that video?”

“Yes.”

“Can you prove it?”

“Not yet.”

Adrian spread his hands.

“She interrupted a wedding with accusations, exposed private marks to hundreds of people, and now claims everyone around her is corrupt.”

I looked toward six directors who had known me since childhood.

Four avoided my eyes.

The company secretary cleared his throat.

“The emergency order prevents Ms.

Vale from voting.

The remaining directors must decide whether she should be placed on administrative leave.”

Adrian watched each hand rise.

Four voted to remove me.

Two voted against.

Margaret lowered her hand last.

“Clara, I’m sorry.”

Security waited outside the glass doors.

Adrian stood and gathered my father’s meeting papers.

“You are prohibited from entering company property or contacting staff until the hearing.”

I did not move.

“You bought that physician.”

“Be careful.”

“And you used Elias to validate a signature he never witnessed.”

Elias stared at the table.

Adrian came around it and stopped before me.

“Your father built a fine company.

You inherited it.

I improved it.”

“You emptied it.”

“I redirected resources toward competent leadership.”

Grace took my arm as security entered.

“Come with me, Clara.”

Adrian returned to my father’s chair.

“Take the dress with you.

It is the last expensive thing you’ll own.”

In the elevator, my hands began to shake.

Grace removed her coat and wrapped it tighter around me.

My phone lit up with a message from Vanessa.

ADRIAN PAID DR.

HALE.

I HAVE THE TRANSFER.
