Chapter 3: My Father’s Voice

“Clara Vale!”

Grace Mercer stood in the cathedral doorway, holding a black case against her chest.

She had been my father’s chief financial officer until Adrian forced her out six months after his funeral.

Adrian pointed toward the ushers.

“She is not invited.

Remove her.”

Grace walked forward.

“Touch me, and every reporter in this room will receive the file before I reach the aisle.”

The ushers stopped.

I stepped down from the altar.

“Grace, what’s in the case?”

“Something your father asked me to protect.”

Elias moved between us.

“Thomas entrusted the recording to me.”

“No,” Grace said.

“He entrusted you with a copy.

He gave me the original because he was no longer sure whom he could trust.”

Elias’s hand fell from the pew.

Adrian laughed, but the sound came out too quickly.

“This is absurd.

Thomas was ill.

Anything he recorded during his final weeks is unreliable.”

Grace placed the case on the front pew.

“Then you won’t mind if Clara hears it.”

“I object,” Elias said.

I turned to him.

“As my attorney?”

His eyes dropped.

“As your father’s friend.”

“You kept this from me for three years.

You don’t get to use friendship now.”

Grace opened the case and removed a small recorder.

Adrian took one step toward it, but two board members blocked his path.

“Move,” he ordered.

One of them, Margaret Cole, folded her arms.

“No.”

Grace pressed play.

My father’s voice filled the cathedral.

“Clara, if you are hearing this, I failed to stop Adrian Sterling before my time ran out.”

My knees weakened.

Grace caught my elbow without stopping the recording.

“Adrian has used Vale accounts to support companies hidden behind trustees and false consulting agreements.

He wants Clara’s voting shares because those shares are the only thing he cannot manufacture.”

Adrian raised his voice.

“A recording can be edited.”

Grace held up a sealed envelope.

“Thomas anticipated that.

The original memory card was witnessed, dated, and placed with a forensic firm.”

My father’s voice continued.

“Clara may believe Adrian loves her.

That is partly my fault.

I allowed him near our family because I thought I could control him.”

“Turn it off,” Adrian snapped.

“No,” I said.

The next words hurt more than the marks beneath my dress.

“I should have warned my daughter sooner.

I was ashamed to admit that I had invited a predator into her life.”

I covered my mouth.

Grace paused the recording and held my shoulders.

“Look at me, Clara.”

“He knew,” I whispered.

“My father knew, and he let me stay with Adrian.”

“He was trying to gather proof.”

“He should have protected me.”

“Yes,” Grace said.

“He should have told you.

Loving you does not excuse the choice he made.”

A court officer entered through the same doorway Grace had used.

“Clara Vale?”

Adrian’s smile returned.

The officer handed me a thick envelope.

“You have been served with an emergency petition concerning control of Vale Consolidated.”

Margaret took the first page and went pale.

“This suspends Clara’s voting authority pending a competency hearing.”

Adrian straightened his jacket.

“I warned you not to embarrass me.”

I faced him across the aisle.

“You filed this before the ceremony.”

“I prepared for the possibility that you might become unstable.”

Grace lifted the recorder.

“And your petition arrived minutes after evidence of your transfers was revealed.”

“My lawyers will call that coincidence.”

I tore the wedding veil from my hair and placed it on the altar rail.

“There will be no wedding.”

Adrian leaned close enough that only the front rows could hear him.

“There doesn’t need to be.

By sunset, your board will remove you, and every account you need to fight me will be frozen.”

My phone rang inside the hidden pocket of my gown.

It was the company secretary.

I answered on speaker.

“Ms.

Vale,” he said, “an emergency board meeting has been called for four o’clock.

Mr.

Sterling has requested your permanent removal.”

Adrian looked at his watch.

“You have three hours left in your own company.”
