Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

The man who rose was Elias Ward, my father’s oldest attorney.

“Where did you get that?” he demanded.

Adrian reached for the document, but I pulled it away.

“Sit down,” he hissed.

“You’re humiliating yourself.”

“No, Adrian.

I’m showing them where twelve million dollars from my company went.”

Vanessa suddenly covered her bracelet.

Elias stepped into the aisle.

“That account was closed after her father passed.”

“It was supposed to be,” I replied.

“But someone reopened it using my authorization.”

Adrian’s face tightened.

“She’s confused,” he announced.

“The pressure has affected her judgment.”

“Then explain this.”

I held up a second page bearing my signature.

A board member leaned forward.

“That transfer was approved three years ago.”

“Yes,” I said.

“On a day I was in London—and Adrian knew it.”

Vanessa stood quickly.

“I’m not staying for this performance.”

“Please do,” I said.

“Your bracelet’s serial number appears on the next invoice.”

Her face drained of color.

Then Elias looked at the final page and gripped the pew.

“This can’t be possible.”

Adrian moved toward him.

“Don’t say another word.”

Elias stared at Adrian, then at me.

“Your father knew,” he whispered.

“Before he passed, he left me a recording—and Adrian has spent years making sure you never heard it.”

Before I could answer, a voice from the cathedral doorway called my name…
