Chapter 4: Not even myself.

Not even myself.

I looked at Maya.

“I want her to grow up knowing she was wanted.”

My voice shook slightly.

“I want her to know family is something people choose every day, not something printed beside a surname.”

Margaret looked away.

“And financially?” Claire asked.

“I want what I’m legally entitled to. Nothing hidden. Nothing private. Nothing disguised as generosity.”

Claire smiled faintly.

“Good.”

“And I want complete independence from Jason.”

Margaret flinched.

But she didn’t argue.

At nine fifteen, Jason returned.

He entered carrying a bag from my favorite bakery and stopped when he saw Claire.

Then he noticed his mother.

“What’s going on?”

No one answered immediately.

His eyes moved to the documents on my bed.

“Rachel?”

I handed Maya carefully to Emily.

Then I looked at the man I had loved since I was twenty-six.

He looked exactly like the man I had known.

That was somehow the hardest part.

“Did you know your father was creating a trust for Vanessa’s son?”

Jason froze.

Margaret turned toward him.

“Answer her.”

He stared at his mother.

“You told her?”

“Rachel asked.”

Jason ran a hand through his hair.

“It wasn’t finalized.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

His shoulders dropped.

“Yes.”

“How long have you known?”

“Two months.”

Two months.

While he assembled Maya’s crib.

While he chose a tiny stuffed rabbit for her bookshelf.

While he rested his hand against my stomach and whispered goodnight.

“Did you intend to tell me?”

“I was trying to figure out how.”

“No.”

My voice remained calm.

“You were trying to figure out how much you could keep.”

He looked at the papers again.

“What are those?”

Claire answered.

“Documents concerning Westbridge Development.”

Jason’s expression changed.

Unlike his mother, he didn’t recognize the name immediately.

Then he did.

“Westbridge?”

“Yes.”

He looked at me.

“What does that have to do with you?”

I thought about Uncle Daniel’s letter.

The freedom to make a choice without fear.

I could have answered dramatically.

I could have watched Jason discover that the woman he had tried to quietly remove from his future possessed a voice in his family company.

But suddenly, none of that interested me.

“I own it.”

He stared at me.

“What?”

“Uncle Daniel left it to me.”

Claire explained the basics.

As she spoke, Jason slowly sat down.

His face shifted from confusion to disbelief.

Finally he looked at his mother.

“Did Dad know?”

Margaret nodded.

“Apparently.”

Jason stood.

“So this is why he was pushing everything through so quickly.”

Claire’s eyes narrowed.

“What do you mean?”

Jason looked toward the window.

“The trust meeting is Monday.”

Claire went still.

“What meeting?”

“My father scheduled a board meeting Monday morning to approve the restructuring.”

“That requires Westbridge consent.”

“I know that now.”

A strange silence settled over the room.

Richard Vance knew Uncle Daniel had died.

He knew Westbridge would pass to someone.

And apparently, he knew exactly who that someone was.

Me.

Claire immediately began sorting through her papers.

“When did you learn about the meeting?”

“Yesterday.”

“Did Richard know Rachel had inherited Westbridge?”

Jason looked at me.

Then at his mother.

“I think so.”

“How?”

“Because last week he asked me something strange.”

“What?”

Jason swallowed.

“He asked whether Rachel had spoken with Daniel’s attorney yet.”

Every small detail of the past month suddenly rearranged itself in my mind.

Richard calling Jason more frequently.

Margaret asking casually whether Daniel’s estate was complicated.

Jason encouraging me to leave paperwork until after Maya arrived.

I had assumed he was being thoughtful.

Maybe he had been.

Or maybe something else had been happening around us.

“Jason,” I said quietly, “did you know Uncle Daniel was trying to reach me?”

He didn’t answer.

My heartbeat accelerated.

“Jason.”

He looked at me.

“I knew Claire had called.”

“How?”

“Your phone rang one night while you were in the shower.”

That wasn’t unusual.

We had always answered each other’s phones.

“What did she say?”

“She said she needed to discuss Daniel’s estate.”

“And?”

“I told her you were exhausted and would call back.”

Claire shook her head.

“I remember.”

I stared at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I did.”

“No.”

“I mentioned the estate attorney called.”

I remembered.

Vaguely.

Jason standing in the kitchen.

Something about Daniel’s paperwork.

Something I could handle later.

Then another thought surfaced.

“Did my uncle ever call?”

Jason looked away.

The room changed.

Emily stepped closer.

“Jason?”

He rubbed both hands over his face.

“Once.”

My voice dropped.

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

“What did he say?”

“He wanted to talk to you.”

“You told me he was too tired for visitors.”

“He was.”

“Jason.”

He closed his eyes.

“He asked whether you had received a package.”

“What package?”

“I don’t know.”

Claire stopped moving.

“Yes, you do.”

Everyone turned toward her.
