Dominic’s voice turned cold.

“Show me.”

Elena opened her cream purse with shaking hands and pulled out six sealed envelopes.

“One arrived on every birthday,” she whispered.

“No return address.

Each contained a photograph of the boys taken without my knowledge.”

Dominic examined the envelopes.

Each bore the Moretti family crest.

“My father’s seal.”

“The first warning came from him,” Elena said.

“But the others came after he d!ed.”

“Why return to Boston?”

“I didn’t.

We live in Vermont.

My cousin’s wedding brought us here.”

Dominic’s phone lit up again.

This time, a message appeared.

SLOANE: Your mother says you’re inside Bellamy House.

We’re coming to find you.

Elena saw it and grabbed her sons.

“We have to leave.”

“No one is taking them from me again.”

“You don’t understand.

Whoever sent these knows where we are.”

She handed him the newest envelope.

Dominic pulled out a photograph—and his stomach tightened.

It showed Elena and the four boys entering Bellamy House less than twenty minutes earlier.

Written across the bottom were five words:

HE MUST NEVER KNOW THE TRUTH.

Then a woman’s voice sounded from the doorway.

“Dominic?”

Elena went pale.

Dominic turned and found Sloane standing there—with his mother beside her.
