Chapter 1 – THE BABY WHO WOKE THE MAFIA BOSS
"You shouldn't have brought that baby!"
The older businessman leaned across the airplane aisle, pointing angrily at Rachel Morales and her crying six-month-old daughter.
Rachel's face burned.
Sophie had been crying for nearly fifteen minutes.
Her little pink teddy-bear onesie was damp around the collar. Her cheeks were red, and her tiny fists kept opening and closing.
Rachel bounced her gently.
"Please, sweetheart. Mommy's here."
The businessman shook his head.
"Some people are trying to sleep!"
"I'm sorry," Rachel whispered.
She hadn't slept properly in nearly thirty-six hours.
Her hands trembled as she searched through the diaper bag for Sophie's bottle.
She could feel everyone watching.
The flight attendant approached.
"Ma'am, you need to calm your baby down."
Rachel looked up helplessly.
"I'm trying."
"Other passengers are complaining."
A low voice came from the seat beside her.
"She's doing the best she can."
The flight attendant turned.
The man sitting beside Rachel wore a fitted black shirt with the collar open. Intricate black-and-gray tattoos covered his neck, hands, and muscular forearms.
His expression was cold enough to silence the businessman across the aisle.
"Would you like to tell me how she can make a six-month-old stop crying on command?" he asked.
The flight attendant hesitated.
"Sir, I was only—"
"Then give her a moment."
Rachel stared at him.
He reached into her open diaper bag.
"Is this her bottle?"
She nodded.
He handed it to her, then adjusted the overhead air vent so the cold air no longer blew directly onto Sophie.
Rachel carefully offered the bottle.
Her daughter began drinking.
The crying slowly faded.
"Thank you," Rachel whispered.
The stranger nodded.
"You're welcome."
She tried to sit upright.
But exhaustion was pulling at her like something physical.
Within minutes, her eyes closed.
Her head fell against the stranger's shoulder.
She woke briefly when Sophie stirred.
The man looked at her.
"Would you like me to hold her while you rest?"
Rachel hesitated.
He didn't reach for the baby.
He waited.
Finally, she nodded.
"Just for a minute."
He carefully took Sophie, supporting her little head and back.
The baby settled against his chest.
Rachel closed her eyes.
For the first time in almost two days, she slept.
When she woke again, the cabin lights were dim.
Sophie was sleeping peacefully in the stranger's arms.
Two men in black suits stood discreetly in the aisle.
The flight attendant approached them.
"Mr. Callahan," she whispered nervously. "Your security is ready."
Rachel's heart stopped.
Callahan.
She knew that name.
Everyone in Chicago knew that name.
She slowly looked at the stranger.
"You're Ethan Callahan?"
He met her frightened eyes.
"Yes."
Rachel immediately reached for Sophie.
Ethan returned the baby without hesitation.
"I'm sorry," she whispered. "I didn't know."
"You have nothing to apologize for."
He glanced at the men standing behind him.
Then he looked back at Rachel.
"Do you have someone meeting you when we land?"
She shook her head.
"Not anymore."
Something in her voice made Ethan pause.
"Where are you going?"
Rachel looked down at her sleeping daughter.
"Somewhere nobody knows us."
Ethan's expression changed.
He turned toward his security team.
"She and the baby are coming with me."
Rachel froze.
And then her phone lit up with a message from the man she had spent the last thirty-six hours trying to escape.
