Chapter 7: The Day Their Story Collapsed
Daniel met us outside the courthouse carrying a sealed envelope.
Tony ran into his father’s arms.
“Did Mom tell you I was lying?” Tony asked.
“She did,” Daniel said.
“That’s why I came.”
Jessica approached with Carol and Michael behind her.
“You have no right to be here,” she told Daniel.
“I have every right when Tony is afraid to go home.”
Carol pointed at me.
“This woman has poisoned all of you.”
I held her gaze.
“You used my identification, my home, and my money.”
“We kept your family together.”
“You kept yourselves comfortable.”
Michael stepped forward.
“Althia, withdraw the complaint, and we can still handle this privately.”
“Like you handled my signature privately?”
His lawyer touched his arm.
“Michael, stop talking.”
Inside the hearing room, Michael’s attorney presented an affidavit from the notary insisting I had appeared at the closing.
For twenty minutes, it looked as though a sworn statement might outweigh a blurred photograph.
Then Naomi stood.
“We call Daniel Mercer.”
Daniel placed the practice pages on the table.
Each carried my name in Jessica’s handwriting.
Jessica rose halfway from her chair.
“Those are years old.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You just admitted they’re yours.”
Her lawyer pulled her back down.
Naomi played Tony’s recording.
Carol’s instructions filled the room, followed by Michael’s warning that he would not lose the apartment.
The notary lowered his head.
The bank’s attorney stood next.
“The lender is withdrawing its claim against Althia’s ownership interest.
We are referring the closing file for a forgery investigation and seeking recovery from the recipients.”
Carol grabbed Michael’s sleeve.
“Do something.”
Michael stared at the table.
The judge ordered JLC Holdings frozen, barred further transfers, and directed Jessica and Carol to surrender financial records.
Michael’s request for control of my portfolio was denied.
Jessica surged toward Naomi’s evidence table and reached for the tablet.
A court officer caught her arm before she touched it.
“That recording belongs to my son!” she shouted.
“It belongs exactly where it is,” Daniel said.
In the hallway, Jessica faced me one final time.
“You think you won?
Tony’s school is gone.
My company is gone.
Mom’s savings are frozen.
This baby will grow up knowing you destroyed its father.”
“No,” I said.
“My child will grow up knowing silence is not the price of belonging.”
Carol pulled Jessica toward the elevator.
“You’ll regret humiliating this family,” Carol said.
“I regretted financing it.”
The elevator doors opened.
Jessica stepped inside, then looked back at Tony.
“You chose her.”
Tony took his father’s hand.
“I chose the truth.”
The doors closed on Jessica’s face.
Michael remained in the hallway.
His lawyer had already walked away.
“There’s something else,” he said.
Naomi moved beside me.
“Choose your words carefully.”
