Chapter 5: The letter crumpled slightly in my grip.

The letter crumpled slightly in my grip.

“He’s been planning this for over a decade,” I whispered.

Whitfield nodded. “And Daniel was his pawn.”

I looked at the letter again. Then I folded it and placed it in my coat pocket.

“I need to see my son.”

The county detention center in Orlando was not where I had expected to spend my evening. But there he sat across from me, behind a reinforced glass partition, his face hollow and red-rimmed.

Richard had been questioned for hours. He had admitted to providing the forged card to Daniel. He had admitted to convincing Daniel that the property belonged to him. But he insisted he never intended anyone to commit fraud.

I didn’t believe him.

“Margaret, you have to understand—”

“I understand perfectly. You spent years poisoning my son’s heart because you couldn’t forgive the past.”

“Your husband cheated my father!”

“No, Richard. Your father came to Thomas for help. Thomas saved him. Read that letter from your father to Thomas, the one your own attorney has.”

Richard’s face went pale.

“Your father wrote it by hand, thanking Thomas for rescuing your family from financial ruin. He sold that land because he needed to. Thomas paid double the market value. And when your father died, Thomas continued to support your mother. He never asked for anything in return.”

Richard’s jaw tightened. “You’re lying.”

“Read the letter, Richard. Or ask yourself why Thomas kept it in a safety deposit box with instructions to protect me if anything happened. Because he knew exactly what you were capable of.”

I let the silence stretch.

Then I added: “You used my son. You fed him a story of betrayal that never happened. And when the truth came out, you boarded a plane to escape the consequences.”

Richard looked down at the table.

“Tell me one thing,” I said. “Did you ever believe it was true?”

He didn’t answer.

At that moment, the guard opened a door behind him. Daniel walked in.

He was wearing a rumpled jacket, his eyes puffy, his steps slow. When he saw Richard, his face twisted with rage.

“You told me my father stole from your father. You told me I was owed a home that was already mine. And I believed you. I betrayed my own mother because of you.”

Richard’s face crumbled.

I stood, pressing my hand against the glass. “Daniel.”

He turned to me.

“I forgave you the moment I found out he was behind this. You were manipulated. I know that now.”

Daniel shook his head. “I’m still responsible. I wanted to believe him. I wanted an excuse for my anger.”

“And now?”

He let out a breath. “Now I know the truth.”

The guard led Richard away. Daniel and I stood on opposite sides of the glass.

“Come home,” I said.

He nodded silently.

That evening, back in Virginia, I sat with Daniel on the back porch. The sky was pink and gold above the trees.

“I should have listened to you,” he said. “When you told me to come home that summer. I should have trusted you.”

“There’s time now.”

He looked down at his hands. “I broke the law. I forged your signature. I tried to take your home. I hurt you. There are no words for that.”

“No, there aren’t.”

He winced.

“But there is action,” I continued. “You can face the consequences. You can testify against Richard. You can begin rebuilding the trust you broke. That’s how you make it right.”

“And if I can’t?”

“Then we both learn what that means.”

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then, slowly, he reached across and took my hand.

“I want to make it right. Whatever it takes. I want to earn my way back into your life.”

I squeezed his fingers. “Then you start tomorrow. You’ll testify when they need you. You’ll cooperate with the investigation. And you’ll work to restore what you’ve taken from me—not just the money, but the respect we once had.”

“I don’t know if I deserve another chance.”

“Deserve doesn’t come into it, Daniel. Love does.”

The sun slipped below the horizon, and the house behind us sat quietly, waiting for the next chapter to begin.

But I knew one thing for certain. The war Richard had started was over. And my son was finally home.
