Chapter 3 – THE SILVER SWALLOW

The alarm was so loud it felt like it was rattling my teeth.

"Turn that damn thing off!" Luca roared into his radio. A second later, the shrieking stopped, replaced by an eerie, suffocating silence.

My mind was spinning too fast to catch a single coherent thought. Mark didn't die in an accident. The words echoed in my head, a cruel taunt. For four years, I had blamed the icy roads of Chicago. I had spent countless nights crying into Sophie’s hair, telling her that her father loved her, that only a tragic twist of fate had taken him away.

I looked down at the silver swallow charm resting in my palm.

"Claire." Luca’s voice broke through my panic. He was staring at me, his dark eyes analyzing my terrified expression. "Who was your husband?"

"Mark," I stammered, backing away. "Mark Dawson. He was an architect. He designed historical renovations. He had nothing to do with the mafia, or Vincent, or any of this!"

Eleanor tugged on Luca’s sleeve, demanding his attention. She signed furiously, and I translated almost mechanically, my voice hollow.

"She says… Mark didn't design renovations for your father. He designed a vault. A subterranean vault beneath the estate. Vincent found out, and wanted the blueprints to steal your father's leverage."

Luca’s face hardened into a mask of pure, lethal fury. "The offshore ledger. Vincent never believed my father destroyed it."

I couldn't breathe. The walls of the luxurious bedroom felt like they were closing in. If Vincent killed Mark to keep the vault a secret, why was Vincent coming here tonight? And why had Patricia hired me of all people?

"Patricia," Luca realized aloud, his eyes widening slightly. "Patricia runs the hiring agency. She brought you here on purpose. She used you as bait to force Vincent into making a move."

My blood turned to ice water.

Bait.

Sophie.

"My daughter," I gasped, dropping the rosary on the bed. "I left my purse in the staff room. My phone is in it. My ID. Everything with my home address." I grabbed Luca’s arm, not caring that he was a dangerous man. "If Vincent knows who I am, if Patricia tipped him off… my daughter is at school!"

Luca didn’t hesitate. He pulled out his phone. "Give me the school's name. Now."

"Lincoln Elementary. Her name is Sophie Dawson. She's in the second grade. She's deaf, Mr. Moretti, she can't hear someone sneaking up on her, please—"

"I’ve got it," Luca said. He dialed a number, his tone shifting into something terrifyingly calm and authoritative. "Marcus. Get a team to Lincoln Elementary immediately. Secure a second-grade girl named Sophie Dawson. Do not let anyone else take her."

He hung up and looked at me. "My men are five minutes away from that school. She will be fine."

But a mother's intuition is a violent, undeniable force. My stomach was churning. I looked at Eleanor. She was staring at my neck, at the silver swallow resting against my skin.

She signed one word.

Look.

I frowned. Look at what?

Look at the bird.

With trembling fingers, I unclasped my necklace and pulled the small silver charm close to my eyes. I had worn it every day for four years. I had polished it. I had cried on it. But I had never looked closely at the tiny, intricate etchings on the underside of the wings.

"There are numbers," I whispered. "Tiny numbers engraved on the back."

Luca stepped closer, leaning in to look. "They’re coordinates. And a combination lock sequence." He looked at his mother. "Mark hid the location of the vault on his wife’s necklace."

"Vincent doesn't know I have this," I said, my voice rising in panic. "He doesn't want me. He wants what I’m wearing!"

Before Luca could respond, heavy footsteps thundered up the grand staircase. Three of Luca’s men, wearing tactical vests and holding weapons drawn, rushed into the hallway.

"Boss," the lead guard said breathlessly. "Vincent’s men have surrounded the perimeter. They haven't breached the doors yet, but they’re cutting the power lines. We need to get you and your mother into the safe room."

"No," I pleaded, grabbing Luca’s jacket. "We have to go get Sophie. We have to go right now!"

"Claire, listen to me," Luca said, grabbing my shoulders. His grip was firm but oddly gentle. "If we leave this house, we walk directly into a firing squad. My best men are on their way to your daughter. You have to trust me."

Trust a mafia boss? Trust the family that had indirectly gotten my husband killed?

I looked at Eleanor. The elderly woman had tears in her eyes. She reached out and touched my hand, signing slowly.

He keeps his promises. Please.

Suddenly, Luca’s phone buzzed. He answered it on speaker, his eyes locked on mine.

"Marcus, tell me you have her."

There was a heavy pause on the other end of the line.

"Boss," Marcus’s voice cracked. "We’re at the school. We locked down the perimeter."

"And the girl?" Luca demanded.

"Her teacher said a man came to pick her up twenty minutes ago. He had all the right paperwork. He claimed there was a family emergency."

The floor dropped out from beneath me. The air was sucked from my lungs.

"Who?" Luca growled, his voice vibrating with lethal intent.

"The front desk took a copy of his ID," Marcus said. "It was Vincent, Boss. Vincent has the little girl."

A ragged, animalistic sound tore from my throat. I staggered backward, clutching my chest as the sheer horror of it crushed me. My baby. My sweet, silent Sophie, who couldn't even cry out for help.

Then, a voice echoed from the grand foyer downstairs. It was amplified by a megaphone, slicing through the heavy oak doors of the mansion.

"Luca!" Vincent’s voice boomed, dripping with cruel amusement. "I think it’s time we had a family meeting. Send down the maid with the necklace, and maybe I’ll let the little deaf girl keep breathing."
