Chapter 6: The Letter Behind the Portrait

Dominic entered the conservatory with Elena, Sloane, and Miriam behind him.

A frame lay shattered beneath his father’s portrait.

Vivienne stood beside the exposed wall safe, holding a metal box.

“Put it down,” Dominic said.

Vivienne clutched it to her chest.

“This contains private family records.”

“Elena and her sons are family.”

“No.

They are leverage.”

Elena moved beside Dominic.

“You sent the photographs.”

Vivienne raised her chin.

“I reminded you to respect the agreement.”

“An agreement signed under a thr3at is not an agreement,” Miriam said.

Graham Barrett emerged from the adjoining office.

“This has gone far enough.”

Sloane stared at him.

“You gave Vivienne access to my house.”

“I tried to protect your future.”

“You built Elena’s landlord company.”

“I managed a difficult situation.”

“You watched four children for six years.”

Graham adjusted his cuff.

“I ensured they were housed.”

Elena stepped toward him.

“You charged me rent.”

“Appearances matter.”

Dominic’s fist closed.

“Open the box.”

Vivienne backed toward the fireplace.

“Your father regretted his weakness.

I corrected it.”

Arthur Vale entered with two uniformed officers behind him.

“No, Vivienne,” the elderly attorney said.

“Antonio regretted what he did to Elena.”

Vivienne’s face changed.

“You should have stayed retired.”

Arthur held up a key.

“Antonio gave me the duplicate three days before he d!ed.”

Graham moved toward the side door.

Sloane blocked him.

“Stay.”

“You do not order me.”

“I just did.”

Arthur unlocked the box after Vivienne placed it on the table.

Inside were a handwritten letter, a flash drive, four sealed trust documents, and the original photograph of Elena’s pregnancy scan.

Dominic unfolded the letter.

“My son,” he read aloud.

“I allowed fear and pride to make me cruel.

Elena is carrying your children.

She tried to tell you.

I stopped her.”

His voice caught.

Elena touched the edge of the table.

“I told myself I was protecting you.

I was protecting control.

If I do not have the courage to confess, Arthur will deliver this letter and the trusts created for every child.”

Vivienne reached for the paper.

Miriam pulled it away.

“Don’t.”

Vivienne’s voice rose.

“Antonio was ill.

He did not understand what he signed.”

Arthur placed a notarized medical statement beside the letter.

“His physician certified his capacity that morning.”

“That proves nothing about the children.”

“The original prenatal records are attached,” Arthur said.

“So is Antonio’s order for a private paternity test after the birth.”

Elena turned.

“There was no test after the birth.”

Arthur looked at Vivienne.

“The investigator reported that all four boys were Dominic’s biological sons.

The result was delivered to this house.”

Dominic faced his mother.

“You knew.”

Vivienne’s eyes hardened.

“I knew they would ruin everything.”

“They were babies.”

“They were heirs.

Four heirs born to a woman who would never obey us.”

Elena’s hand trembled.

“So you continued the warnings after your husband was gone.”

“I kept order.”

Sloane lifted her phone.

“Say it again.”

Graham lunged for the device.

Dominic caught his arm.

The phone fell but continued recording.

Graham pulled free.

“Turn that off, Sloane.”

“No.”

“I am your father.”

“And Elena is their mother.

You helped terrify her for six years.”

Graham looked at Dominic.

“We can settle this.

The merger proceeds, the marriage proceeds, and Elena receives enough money to disappear permanently.”

Sloane’s eyes filled, but her voice stayed level.

“You just offered to purchase a woman’s life in front of your daughter.”

“I offered stability.”

“You offered me to a man like part of a contract.”

Vivienne swept the flash drive from the table and threw it into the fireplace.

Arthur did not move.

“That was a copy.”

Her smile vanished.

Miriam held up an identical drive.

“This contains every transfer, every surveillance invoice, and every message between you and Graham.”

One officer stepped forward.

“Vivienne Moretti, place your hands where I can see them.”

Vivienne pointed at Elena.

“If I fall, the Moretti companies fall with me.”

Dominic took the engagement ring from his jacket and placed it on the trust documents.

“Then they fall.”

Graham’s phone rang.

He answered, listened, and smiled.

“You may want to wait,” he said.

“A family court judge has just granted temporary emergency custody of the boys to Vivienne.”

Elena made a broken sound.

The instant my husband stood up and reached for his coat, the smile on my face disappeared.

Graham looked directly at her.

“By morning,” he said, “your sons will belong to the family you tried to escape.”
