Chapter 7: The Morning They Tried to Take the Boys

Two child welfare officers arrived at Sloane’s townhouse before dawn.

Elena stood in the doorway with Dominic beside her.

“You cannot take them,” Elena said.

The senior officer showed Miriam the order.

“We are required to place the children with Vivienne Moretti until the hearing.”

“She is under investigation,” Miriam replied.

“The order says the allegations are unverified.”

Upstairs, Matteo began crying.

Dominic gripped the doorframe.

“The order was obtained with a false DNA report.”

“The judge will hear that at nine.”

Elena looked at Miriam.

“Can they remove them now?”

Miriam’s silence answered.

Luca came downstairs carrying four small backpacks.

“Mom said we might have to be brave.”

Dominic crouched in front of him.

“You should never have been asked to be this brave.”

A black car stopped at the curb.

Vivienne stepped out with Graham and two attorneys.

Elena wrapped both arms around her sons.

“She is not coming near them.”

Vivienne approached the steps.

“Do not make this harder.”

“You made it hard six years ago,” Elena said.

“I’m making it stop.”

Vivienne handed the officer a folder.

“My home is prepared.”

Dominic stood.

“Your home is where my father’s letter was hidden.”

“And your judgment is compromised by obsession.”

Sloane opened the door behind them.

“Then perhaps the judge should hear your voice.”

She pressed play on her phone.

Vivienne’s recorded words filled the entrance: “I knew they would ruin everything.”

Graham reached for the phone.

An officer blocked him.

Sloane continued the recording.

Graham’s voice followed: “The merger proceeds, the marriage proceeds, and Elena receives enough money to disappear permanently.”

The senior welfare officer lowered the custody order.

“No children are leaving with either of you.”

Vivienne looked at Graham.

“You said that recording would be deleted.”

Sloane stared at her father.

“You tried?”

Graham’s attorney pulled him back.

“Say nothing else.”

At the courthouse, the four boys waited with Elena in a private room.

Dominic remained in the hall while Miriam placed the genuine laboratory report before the judge.

“Probability of paternity exceeds 99.99 percent,” the judge read.

“Why was this court given a different result?”

Vivienne’s attorney stood.

“My client relied on information supplied to her.”

The laboratory director entered with Arthur.

“No,” the director said.

“Mrs.

Moretti ordered my deputy to substitute the report.

He has signed a statement.”

Vivienne turned on Graham.

“You promised the deputy would stay loyal.”

The courtroom went still.

The judge removed her glasses.

“Mrs.

Moretti, did you knowingly submit falsified evidence?”

Vivienne glanced at Dominic.

“Everything I did was to preserve what his grandfather built.”

Dominic stood.

“You preserved buildings and accounts.

You destroyed birthdays.”

Graham leaned toward his attorney.

“Get me out of here.”

Sloane stepped into the aisle.

“Before you leave, tell the judge who paid the photographer outside Bellamy House.”

Graham’s attorney grabbed his sleeve.

Arthur placed an invoice on the clerk’s desk.

“Barrett Holdings paid Moretti Security through Rossi Heritage Consulting.”

Graham rose.

“That company was Vivienne’s idea.”

“And the annual warnings?” Dominic asked.

Vivienne looked at Graham.

“His men delivered them.”

“You wrote them,” Graham snapped.

The second twist broke across the courtroom in their own voices.

Each had brought documents blaming the other.

Miriam laid both sets before the judge.

“Their signatures appear on every authorization.”

Two investigators entered through the rear doors.

The judge looked at Elena.

“Ms.

Rossi, your children will remain solely in your custody.

Mr.

Moretti may have contact only with your consent until a permanent family agreement is filed.”

Elena released the breath she had held all morning.

“Thank you.”

The judge turned to Vivienne and Graham.

“The clerk will refer the falsified report, fraudulent order, surveillance records, and coercive communications to the district attorney.”

Vivienne was escorted into the corridor.

Dominic followed as an investigator read the allegations.

His mother looked back at him.

“When those companies collapse, your sons will know their mother cost them everything.”

Dominic opened the courtroom door for Elena and the boys.

“No,” he said.

“They will know their mother saved them.”

The elevator doors closed on Vivienne.

Then Arthur touched Dominic’s arm.

“There is one final document,” he said.

The instant my husband stood up and reached for his coat, the smile on my face disappeared.

“It does not concern the companies.

It concerns what your father wanted Elena to receive from you.”
