Chapter 1: The Hand She Raised Twice

My mother-in-law sl@pped me in front of everyone at Sunday dinner.

Then she raised her hand to do it again.

This time, I caught her wrist.

When she tried with the other hand, I sl@pped her back.

The whole table went silent.

My husband Michael finally stood, but not to defend me.

To stop his mother from saying too much.

Diane called me a gold digger, then screamed, “Tell her, Michael!”

I asked what she meant.

Michael went pale.

Then Diane said the sentence that changed everything:

“Ask your husband where he really goes every Thursday night.”

Before I could respond, Michael’s phone rang on the table.

The name on the screen made my stomach drop.

It was my sister.

What was Michael hiding every Thursday night — and why was her sister calling at that exact moment?
