Part 2 ⬇️
I stared at the phone.
My sister’s name.
Lighting up that screen like an accusation.
Michael reached for it fast.
Too fast.
“Don’t.” My voice came out quieter than I expected.
He stopped.
I picked it up myself and answered.
“Hello?”
Silence.
Then the sound of breathing.
Then the call ended.
The whole table was watching me.
Diane had sat back down, arms crossed, wearing a small smile I will never forget.
“Michael,” I said.
“Look at me.”
He wouldn’t.
“How long?” I asked.
He said nothing.
But his mother did.
“Long enough,” Diane said.
“Long enough that we all thought you’d figure it out by now.”
My sister-in-law Karen stood up from the end of the table.
“Mom, stop—”
“No.” Diane cut her off.
“She deserves to know what kind of family she married into.
What her own sister is.”
My hands were shaking.
I looked at Michael one more time.
He finally met my eyes.
And what I saw there wasn’t guilt.
It was relief.
Like he’d been waiting for this moment.
Like he was glad it was finally out of his hands.
That was the moment I understood.
This wasn’t an accident.
This dinner was planned.
Then Karen whispered something to her husband.
He pulled out his phone and showed her the screen.
Her face went white.
“Oh no,” she said.
“She’s already here.”
The front door opened.
What happens when she walks through that door changes everything.
