Chapter 2 – The Unwanted Bride
Chloe froze as the cold steel of the weapon caught the light.
Victor calmly slid the gun into the hidden shoulder holster beneath his jacket.
He did not yell at her for snooping in his private desk.
He simply looked down at her with an intense, unreadable expression.
He told her that the ring belonged to his late father, and it was a reminder of a fatal mistake.
Chloe let out a breath she did not realize she was holding.
Before Victor could say anything else, his cell phone buzzed violently in his pocket.
He answered it, his jaw tightening as he listened to the voice on the other end.
He hung up the phone and told Chloe to stay exactly where she was.
Victor left the room, leaving Chloe entirely alone with her racing thoughts.
She waited for ten minutes before she heard the sound of shouting coming from the grand foyer downstairs.
Against her better judgment, she slipped out of the suite and crept toward the sweeping marble staircase.
She peeked over the railing to see a stunning woman in a red designer dress screaming at Victor.
It was Isabella Donati, the daughter of the rival mafia boss.
Isabella was demanding to know why Victor had rejected her father's marriage proposal.
She claimed that their union was the only way to prevent an all-out war in the streets of Chicago.
Victor stood with his hands in his pockets, looking completely bored by her threats.
He told Isabella that he would rather burn his own empire to the ground than marry her.
Isabella's face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury.
She pointed a perfectly manicured finger directly at Victor's chest.
She declared that if he did not marry her by the end of the month, her father would slaughter everyone inside this mansion.
Isabella turned on her heel and stormed toward the front door.
As she passed the staircase, she looked up and locked eyes directly with Chloe.
