Chapter 1 – The Locked Drawer
Chloe stood outside the heavy oak door of the master suite.
Her hands trembled as she gripped the handle of her plastic cleaning caddy.
She had spent the entire weekend trying to convince herself that Friday night was just a fever dream.
Victor Russo had actually let her sleep in his bed.
He had stayed beside her, acting as a silent guardian while she fought off a terrible illness.
Now, she was the only employee allowed inside his private sanctuary.
She pushed the door open and stepped into the massive, pristine room.
The scent of cedar and expensive cologne immediately washed over her.
The bed was already perfectly made, the charcoal-gray comforter pulled tight.
Chloe set her supplies down and walked toward the mahogany desk near the window.
She began dusting the polished surface with a microfiber cloth.
Her rag caught on the edge of the top drawer, pulling it open by a fraction of an inch.
She knew the absolute first rule of working for the Russo family was never to look at things that did not belong to her.
Curiosity overwhelmed her common sense.
Chloe pulled the drawer open just a little bit further.
Inside sat a thick velvet box, flipped open to reveal a stunning diamond engagement ring.
The stone was massive, glittering aggressively in the morning light.
Next to the ring was a printed dossier with a photograph of a beautiful, dark-haired woman.
Chloe felt a sudden, crushing weight in her chest that she could not explain.
She was just a maid, and yet the idea of Victor marrying someone else physically hurt her.
Before she could close the drawer, the heavy suite door clicked shut behind her.
Victor stood in the doorway, wearing a tailored black suit that made him look like a dark god.
His dark eyes flicked from her pale face down to the open drawer.
Chloe stepped back, her heart hammering against her ribs.
Victor walked slowly across the room, stopping mere inches from where she stood.

He reached out and traced a single finger down her cheek.
