My legs wouldn’t move.
Arthur was still gripping my wrist, his one good hand trembling, tears sliding silently into his beard.
He wasn’t crying from happiness.
He was crying from something that looked a lot more like guilt.
“How long?” I finally managed.
“How long has he been here?”
Lucy folded her arms.
“Four months.”
“Four months.” I repeated it like I didn’t understand the words.
“And you never called me?”
“I did call you, Alexander.” Her voice didn’t rise.
That was worse than if it had.
“Three times.
Your assistant told me you’d left instructions not to take calls from your ex-wife.”
I had no answer for that.
I pulled out my phone and called Maya.
It rang twice.
“Brother!” Her voice was bright, easy.
“What a surprise — “
“Where is Dad, Maya?”
A pause.
Just one second too long.
“He’s at the resort.
You know that.
I sent you a video just last — “
“I’m standing next to him right now.”
Silence.
Then, very quietly, she said: “That’s not possible.”
Lucy was watching me.
She reached into that same rusty drawer and placed one more document on the table.
I looked down.
It was a bank statement.
My monthly transfers.
Every single one of them — received, and redirected.
The account they’d been redirected to wasn’t Maya’s personal account.
It belonged to someone I’d trusted even more than my sister.
What Alexander found on that bank statement exposed a betrayal far deeper than anything he imagined.
